Must-haves to Pack for a Ski trip
Ski trips are a great way to enjoy the beauty of the winter season and get some exercise in the great outdoors. Whether it’s your first time hitting the slopes or you’re an expert, the right gear can make or break your skiing experience. Here are some must-haves for your next ski trip to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable experience:
Proper clothing and gear
Have a look through the following to make sure you’re prepped and ready to go:
Ski equipment
This includes your skis, ski boots, ski poles, and a helmet. Make sure that your equipment is in good condition and fits properly to ensure safety on the slopes.
Base layers
Base layers are those that are closest to your skin. They’re designed to wick moisture away from your body in order to keep you warm and dry. We recommend looking for base layer tops and bottoms made of moisture-wicking materials like polyester or merino wool.
Mid layer
This layer provides additional insulation and can be a fleece or a soft shell jacket.
Ski jackets and pants
These should be waterproof and windproof to protect you from the elements. Look for ski jackets and pants with features like removable liners and ventilation to help regulate your body temperature.
Ski socks
Choose a pair of ski socks that are specifically designed for skiing, as they will provide extra support and cushioning for your feet.
Ski goggles
Goggles are essential for protecting your eyes from the sun, wind, and snow. Look for a pair with interchangeable lenses to adapt to changing weather conditions.
Snow boots
If you plan on doing any ski activities, be sure to pack a pair of warm and waterproof snow boots.
Neck gaiters
Neck gaiters are a versatile accessory that can be worn as a face covering, hairband, beanie, and so on. Ultimately, they help protect your exposed skin from the cold.
Ski resorts often have rental equipment available, but it’s a good idea to bring your own gear if you can. Showing up with everything you need can help you save money (over time!), skip the line, and ensure everything fits exactly how you like it.
Supplemental Oxygen canisters
If you plan to travel above 8,000 ft, such high altitudes and physical activity can lead to shortness of breath. At sea level, there’s normally 21% oxygen in the air you breathe. At high altitudes, there can be less. Freezing temperatures can exacerbate these symptoms. Supplemental oxygen can help you feel better faster during altitude acclimation.
Boost Oxygen canisters (but of course!) are a convenient way to get a burst of 95% oxygen. They are small and portable, making them easy to carry with you on the slopes.
First aid kit
Accidents can happen whether you’re on the slopes in a popular resort, or cross-country skiing and making your own way. Make sure to include bandages, pain medication, and any other necessary items. Boost Oxygen Medium and Pocket Size canisters also fit conveniently into any first aid kit. Here are some other essential items to include in your kit:
- Adhesive bandages in various sizes
- Gauze pads and rolls
- Antiseptic wipes
- Antibiotic ointment
- Pain medication (such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen)
- Tweezers
- Scissors
- Safety pins
- Thermometer
- Emergency whistle
- Reflective duct tape
You may also want to include any specific medications that you or your group members may need, such as inhalers or EpiPens.
Remember, a first aid kit is meant to provide basic emergency care and is not a replacement for professional medical treatment. If you or someone in your group experiences a serious injury or illness, seek medical attention immediately.
Snacks and hydration
Skiing can be physically demanding, so it’s important to stay nourished and hydrated while on the slopes. Pack some high-energy snacks like granola bars or trail mix, and bring a water bottle or hydration pack to stay hydrated.
Sunscreen
The sun can be intense at high altitudes, so don’t forget to apply sunscreen to protect your exposed skin from sunburn.
Fun ski activities
After a long day on the slopes, it’s time to relax and have some fun. Pack some board games or card games to play with friends, or bring some cozy blankets and hot cocoa to enjoy by the fire.
By following these suggestions, you’ll be well-prepared for a safe and enjoyable ski trip. Happy skiing!
