Athletic Training Month Interview: Heloise Jones

March is Athletic Training Month and we are very proud to spotlight talented and passionate Certified Athletic Trainers who dedicate themselves to the performance of their athletes. They also understand the benefits of integrating Boost Oxygen into their protocols.

We thank Athletic Trainer Heloise Jones for sharing her time and perspectives on being an Athletic Trainer:

BOOST: When did you decide to become an athletic trainer?

JONES: I originally went into the pre-med route as a freshman in college.  I quickly realized that was not the route for me when I worked in the oncology unit in one of the local hospitals my freshman year.  It wasn’t until I became a student assistant my sophomore year in the department of sports medicine that I decided that athletic training was the route I wanted to go.  At the time I was assigned to help Ron Courson who currently serves as the Sports Medicine Director at the University of Georgia collect data.  He and his wife Eileen took me to dinner one night to give me pros and cons of athletic training vs. PT.  I went the road less traveled.

BOOST: What is the most rewarding part of your job?

JONES: When I can help an athlete and know that I have helped them get back from an injury so that they can play and do the sport they love.

BOOST: What is the most challenging part of your job?

JONES: There is not enough time in the day to accomplish what I want to accomplish.  There are so many underserved communities who need athletic trainers but can’t afford it so they go without.  All youths deserve to be taken care of.  It bothers me when I see an athlete hurt for months but cannot be taken care of and can’t because they don’t have the means.  There has to be a better way.

BOOST: Describe the most amazing experience that affirmed your decision that “I am doing what I love to do”

JONES: There really is not one particular experience that outweighs others in terms of affirmation.  Every day brings new challenges and some days you overcome those challenges and champion the day.  Others are not as great BUT at the end of the day, when you get a phone call, text or email from a former athlete about something that you helped them with or when you see an athlete come back from double knee surgery that you helped them rehab from and they have the BEST season of their career then you have affirmation that you are doing what you love to do!

About Heloise:

I have been athletic trainer now for almost 30 years and cannot imagine doing anything else.  I recently started my own sports medicine consulting business in 2019.  I am a proud business owner while still working in the private practice setting.  I credit my career as an athletic trainer that has given me the ability to blaze my own path.  I am a firm believer you are where you are supposed to be.  Do things with passion or don’t do them at all!  HAPPY NATIONAL ATHLETIC TRAINING MONTH TO ALL MY FELLOW ATHLETIC TRAINERS!
