If running a marathon has been on your bucket list for years (or decades) now, it’s time to finally cross it off. Running 26.2 miles sounds daunting at first, but if you’re running through one of these beautiful courses, the miles might just fly by.

Add some breathtaking scenery to the challenge by running one these stunning marathons.

1. Big Sur International Marathon

Wind along the California coastline, climb up Hurricane Point, and eat a strawberry three miles from the finish. This iconic marathon is everything you want and more.

2. Grand Island Trail Marathon

Held every year in July, this race is part of the Great Lakes Marathon Series and the course runs along the shores of Lake Superior. After tracing the spectacular shoreline, runners head up to the vista of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

3. New River Marathon

One of Utah’s crown jewels, Moab’s landscape is striking. This course runs through narrow canyons, on canyon rims, and through narrow, single-track trails. With 3500 feet of elevation gain and loss, you’ll definitely want to work on your hills after registering.

5. Anchorage Mayor’s Marathon

Every summer solstice, thousands of runners make their way to Alaska’s largest city for the Midnight Sun Marathon. Start at the foothills of the Chugach Mountains, hit the Chester Creek Trail, and finish at Delaney Park.

6. Jackson Hole Marathon


The Jackson Hole Marathon begins in the heart of Jackson, follows a paved pathway out to Wilson, WY, and finishes at Teton Village, the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Racers are treated to stunning views of the Teton range, and the valley of Jackson.
